About Rattypaedia

In the beginning

Rattypaedia was started on April 12th 2009 as an Easter weekend brainwave. Initially I looked into installing some Wiki software on my own server, alongside [WWW]my website. It worked, but it didn't do everything I wanted it to without a lot of faffing about. I didn't want to get bogged down in the system; I wanted to make the wiki! Next idea was to find a hosted wiki. I wanted somewhere that was free, had no adverts plastered all over it, which had plenty of wikis already hosted to 'lift' ideas off, and which didn't look as if it might disappear into the outof next week. Took me best part of the day, but eventually I landed on wikispotwikispot and registered to create my own wiki.

My first instinct was to make it look 'pretty'. I lifted most of the colour scheme and formatting styles straight off my website, got the logo set up, and was off! After a bit of juggling around and some help from some friendly gnomegnomes who knew more about how it ought to work, I got the framework set up and a few entries in.

Next step was to visit all the forums who know me and advertise the wiki. Then I got all keen and registered a url for the site. Lots of emails sent off to webmasters, asking them to link to Rattypaedia and to come and contribute. No less than three other people said they'd been thinking of starting a wiki for ages - one had even just set one up before finding this. Oops.

Aims

Rattypaedia is intended to become a valuable and comprehensive resource of information and interest on the topic of pet rats. I'm hoping that once it all gets going I can just concentrate on keeping it tidy and linked, while it grows on its own and becomes less and less 'mine'.
