Colour Inheritance
All of our rat coat colours sit on top of one of two base colours. Agouti, which is the wild, banded brown and black hair and lighter underbelly, and black (or self). These influence the colour created by other genes in different degrees.
| Gene | Agouti based version A/A or A/a | Black based version a/a | |
| m/m | Cinnamon | Mink | This makes a large difference in colour appearance (phenotype) |
| rb/rb | Russian Blue Agouti | Russian Blue | This makes a fairly small difference in colour |
| c/c | Pink eyed white | Pink eyed white | This makes no difference in colour - the albino gene masks the effect of the agouti or black genes, but they are still there and will be inherited as usual by any offspring. |
The agouti gene is dominant over the black.
Lightbulb.
IN PROGRESS.
