Feeding for Growth and Development
Pregnant and lactating does and growing kittens require extra protein and nutrients to support their needs.
Pregnancy
Lactating Mums and Growing Kittens
By the time the kittens reach two weeks their mother may be supporting her own body-weight in kittens, which means that she requires top rate nutrition to support her.
The doe and as they grow, the kittens too, should be given plenty of fresh greens such as curly kale, dandelion leaves and clover (I love summer litters, they're so less expensive to keep in greens!). Puppy milk such as Lactol can be given in a second water bottle, or mixed in with soft foods such as egg food or scrambled egg. Small tins of Almo Nature cat food, Nature Diet moist puppy food, and mixes such as Vitalin for working dogs, can be mashed and fed to provide the additional protein required. Chicken bones with some meat left on will provide protein, along with great amusement watching tiny babies nibbling on enormous bones.
Mum and her kittens will eat a lot of food. They need to be free fed, so if the bowl is empty when checked it needs checking more frequently or filling higher.
