Young rats in the UK and Australia are called 'kittens', in the same way that young cats or rabbits are. In laboratories and in the USA the term 'pups' is more often used. Newborn rats resemble puppies more than they do kittens, but as they develop and their eyes open the resemblance to cat kittens is more evident in the way they move and play. A compromise term of 'rittens' is used in some places.
