Mites
Radfordia ensifera is the mite most commonly found in the UK. It causes intense itching and is the cause of scabs around the neck and shoulders, often mistakenly attributed to fighting with cagemates.
Mange Mites
Notoedres muris is a mange mite which burrows under the skin and can cause the growth of nodules on the ear and nose of the rat.
Other Parasites
Other parasites include lice and cat fleas.
Treatment
All of these insects can be treated with a dose of 'spot on' Ivermectin, or by giving a careful dose of Ivermectin on a cube of bread.
