A Rat's Nose
A rat's nose is an incredibly sensitive organ, smelling in 'stereo', with a full one percent of genes being involved in the detection of odours.
The sense of smell helps young rats to learn which foods are safe and good to eat, by smelling their mother's breath. If your rat is unsure about a new food, try eating some yourself and letting them learn from you.
Smell also helps a rat to follow the scent trails left by other rats, and you can watch them following the scent as if they're 'reading' the information about who has gone before.
