Smelly Rats

If your rats smell even though you're cleaning them out frequently, there are several things that could be happening.

If your rats are new and scared of you, they could be fear pooping. This is softer and smellier than normal.

If your rats are still young enough to require a high protein diet, this could be making their poo smellier than normal. Time and an adult diet will help.

Is it the cage that is smelling, or have your rats been peeing out through the bars and making the wall/carpet smell?

Have you tried changing the cage substrate? Some deal with odours better than others.

Does your cage have uncoated bars? These can sometimes absorb odours so that no amount of cleaning will remove them. You may need to paint the cage to remove the problem.

Contrariwise, are you cleaning the cage too often, prompting your rats to make extra efforts to re-scent their home?
