Breathing Problems

What to Look For

Rattling/noisy breathing is an obvious sign but other symptoms include redness around the eyes and nose and sometimes thinned fur.
The redness of the eyes and nose isn't blood, rats have slightly red tinted eye fluid/mucus called Porphyrin and when breathing problems occur this is over-produced.
If your rat has this discharge, don't instantly think he/she has a breathing problem. Over-production can also be caused by a scratched eye or dusty bedding/litter.

2010-02-08 12:38:57   In worse cases, also gasping for air. My rat Dippy Dosey did not respond to treatment from our vet and I looked after her for a full day and night until she passed away in my arms at about 4.30am. —RoseRattus
