Injured Toe or pulled claw

Toes are often injured by becoming trapped or being bitten by other rats. Toes bleed very freely and it can be worrying to see the amount of blood loss. Bleeding can often be stopped using cornflour. Swollen toes generally recover within a couple of days. If there are signs of infection then consult your vet.

Overgrown Claw

Claws can be clipped using nail clippers or animal claw trimmers. Care should be taken to only take off the clear part of the claw, and it's useful to have styptic powder or cornflour to hand in case of mistakes. Keep a close eye on old rats with weak back legs whose nails may curl into their pads due to lack of use.
